The Gemological Institute of America has devised a set of guidelines to grade diamond color. Graded diamonds are compared to the color of control stones, which are preselected gems of a specific color.
Diamonds are graded before they are set into jewelry otherwise, the metal can affect the color of the diamond. A lettering system from D to Z is used to identify the amount of color present in each diamond. A diamond that is graded with a "D" is considered a rare and completely colorless diamond.
Fancy Color Diamond Grading
Fancy color diamonds are graded in two ways. The first factor considered is the stone’s basic hue, such as yellow, blue, red, etc. The second is the diamond’s intensity. Both color characteristics form the basis for determining a fancy colored diamond’s worth.
